Η μικρή Ρέιγκαν ΜακΝίλ ζει με την Κρις, μητέρα της και διάσημη ηθοποιό, σε ένα ήσυχο προάστιο της Ουάσιγκτον. Όμως, τώρα τελευταία η Ρέιγκαν δεν αισθάνεται καλά. Παρουσιάζει περίεργα κι ανεξήγητα συμπτώματα, όπως ανόρθωση του σώματός της από το έδαφος και άσκηση υπερφυσικών δυνάμεων. Οι γιατροί στους οποίους απευθύνεται για βοήθεια η απελπισμένη μητέρα σηκώνουν ψηλά τα χέρια τους, αδυνατώντας να εξηγήσουν το φαινόμενο. Τότε, η Κρις παίρνει την απόφαση να ζητήσει τη βοήθεια της εκκλησίας και συγκεκριμένα συναντά τον πατέρα Κάρας, που είναι παράλληλα και ψυχίατρος. Όταν ο τελευταίος αντικρίζει τη Ρέιγκαν, συνειδητοποιεί ότι η νεαρή κοπέλα είναι δαιμονισμένη, έχοντας καταληφθεί από ένα τρομακτικό δαιμονικό πνεύμα. Τότε, ο πατήρ Κάρας αποφασίζει να ζητήσει τη βοήθεια του πατρός Μέριν, ειδικού σε ζητήματα εξορκισμού, προκειμένου να απαλλάξουν το άτυχο κορίτσι από τον δαίμονα. Ο γηραιός πατήρ Μέριν δέχεται, και ο εξορκισμός αρχίζει…
