Το «Yuli» είναι το παρατσούκλι που δόθηκε στον Κάρλος Ακόστα από τον πατέρα του, Πέντρο. Η μόνη μόρφωση που έλαβε ο μικρός Yuli ήταν στους δρόμους μιας υποβαθμισμένης γειτονιάς στην Αβάνα. Αλλά ο Πέντρο ήξερε ότι ο γιος του έχει φυσικό ταλέντο στο χορό και τον ανάγκασε να πάει στην Εθνική Σχολή Χορού της Κούβας. Παρά την αρχική του αντίδραση, ο Κάρλος Ακόστα μαγεύτηκε από τον κόσμο του χορού και δημιούργησε τον δικό του μύθο ως ένας από τους καλύτερους χορευτές της γενιάς του κι ως ο πρώτος μαύρος καλλιτέχνης που ενσάρκωσε τον Ρομέο στο Βασιλικό Μπαλέτο του Λονδίνου, στο οποίο συνέχισε την καριέρα του για 17 χρόνια.
